My First Digital Photo

I just realized something.
I was hanging around in my iPhoto looking at pictures when I noticed the date on this one. It’s been almost exactly 5 years since I took my first digital photo. And this is it! This is the first picture I ever took with a digital still camera! Ever!!!
When I was about 14 I became interested in videotaping and editing… parties, events, projects, holidays, music videos, funny short films, etc… I would wire two VCRs together and edit the best I could. I loved the little movies I made. I still have boxes and boxes of the VHS tapes. When I bought my Sony digital video camera back in 2002 I was told that it took STILL PICTURES, ooooooooh. I thought, "This is great! I’ll never need another camera again!" After viewing the pictures that my video camera had taken I was like… "Aw man, these look like sh*t!" Soooooo, I begrudgingly bought a Sony Cybershot still camera and the reason why I did was because it used the same battery as my Sony video camera. The camera was 4.2 Megapixels, which was the most ANY camera had. And I had to buy the top of the line. When I got home from the camera shop I took out my camera and shot this somewhat dark and out of focus picture of myself using a mirror that was on the floor.
Today this is one of my favorite photos because it marks a turning point in my life. I was living just outside of Cleveland and bored with my job and thinking about moving to New York City. I just bought an iMac G4, a 20GB iPod, a video camera and a still camera… My digital life was complete. I was ready for some fun.
When I look at this photo, I see a person smiling in a mirror who has no idea what’s ahead of him. For that night, the camera was just a new toy, something I might not ever use that much. I mean, I had my video camera so when would I ever pick up my still camera anyway? I’ve since carried that same still camera around with me for 5 years now. I still use the same 125MB memory stick in it that I got the day I bought it. I’m beside myself when I think of all the pictures that would never have existed if I never brought my camera home that night.
I can’t believe it’s only been 5 years since I started this crazy digital journey. I look back through my photos and it feels like 20 years. It’s been amazing and I can’t wait to see what happens next. I hope I’m just getting started.
